In This Season Of Capricorn

Hey, the Hudson Hipster here.

It is January of 2011. For one reason or another, January seems to be a highly productive time for Catch The Reference? It was late December of 2005 going into January of 2006 when he and William first started recording.
January of 2007 would have their first collaboration with friend Peter. Moving into January of 2008 would see the start of the unreleased Jester Demo. January 2009 would see Catch The Reference? make his first attempts at what would become “Stoned Alone.” And now, January 2011 sees some recording sessions with great potential. Catch The Reference? is making bedfellows out of former classmates, recording some interesting new material bent far more on a professional sound and listenable product.
There are also plans to work with William, The Jester, on a project showcasing his newfound talent on the ukulele.

Things are looking hopeful. As Catch The Reference? put it, in a line he claims he wrote during a professionally UNdiagnosed bout with paranoid schizophrenia, “The days are getting longer, life is getting brighter.”

Look forward to a whole new side of Catch The Reference?, and prepare to meet his talented friends!

Slow As Molasses

Hey, Hudson Hipster here to give you a brief message from behind enemy lines.

Catch The Reference? has long since abandoned the tapes project. However, this past summer, he put together a new album, finally released to download in October (currently only through Facebook.)

The album, “Bitches Kitsch” recapitulates his brief career, mixing in new recordings with old tapes and found bits, along with previously released songs in new mixes. It is meant to be the final word on this era of his career, leaving a clean slate for the next phase.

And there is a next phase.

Currently, he is working on forming a large, collaborative collective. Goings are slow, but in the only session held so far, one exceptional song was produced. The notion behind this project is that rather than rely on his only talents, Catch The Reference? hopes to pool others talents together. He hopes to be more of a catalyst, a producer, a coach, and a companion. He may right the songs, or demo the songs, but he is not bent on being the main performer. He is also not bent on having a static cast, but instead building a large rogues gallery, so that a given release would have a rotating cast of characters.

He is also the unofficial manager of a throwback group, led by a fascinating duo. His involvement may increase, but for now is limited.

I hope this message finds you feeling groovy and such. Keep on with the keeping on, and stay tuned for more music!

What Have You Now?

Hey, the Hudson Hipster here to give a tragically hip update.

Catch The Reference? and William have been holding some short and barely productive sessions, and are now in the process of arranging a full-on Jester session with member Peter (the whole trio has not been together since August).

Catch The Reference? has still not resumed the tapes project.

He has, however, obtained once again the amplifier used to make Feedback-Laden Fantasies, after his dad no longer had any use for it, and granted him the sole owner.

Catch The Reference? has a new project in the conceptual stages at the moment. Meanwhile, he may also release an EP or something to get out some recordings he has lying around.

Time is troubling in that there is so little of it, Catch The Reference? tells me. He promises, though, that if you give him enough time, he’ll give you more recordings.

It has also been noted that Feedback-Laden Fantasies does not have a cover. This is going to be taken care of.

That’s all for now. A bit of a sobering update, but that is just how things are right now.

The Boys In Blue are Here! Hit the Back!

As the last sands trickle down for 2009, Catch The Reference? has released his latest LP, “The Boys In Blue.” Go to the discography section for links to it and other albums. Goodbye 2009, hello 2010!

New Album Almost Done

•December 20, 2009 • Leave a Comment

First off, let me mention that the tape project has been delayed indefinately.  The tapes will see the light of day, but it is quite a stressful process working through them, and as such, the project is not currently be worked on.  But it is intended to be resumed at some point.

But meanwhile, an album that has been on hold for a while now is finished, and going through the final preparations before being released.  It should be up sometime this week, I am told, so ain’t that pretty sweet?  Merry Christmas indeed!

Anyway, Catch The Reference? has been in some Jester sessions, that have been falling apart after starting off strong.  We can hope for the best, but for now, very little has been produced.

The Tapes Are Coming, The Tapes Are Coming

That’s right, the tapes are coming.  Catch The Reference? has listened to at least 10 tapes.  And he has cut a few highlights from each side, and is going to present them soon.

I am adding a new page for the tapes.  Eventually, this new page will be filled with information as well as download links, but for now, it is going to be more of a placeholder.  But check back soon, because Catch The Reference? promises to have at least a few tapes up to share before Thanksgiving.

New Projects!

I just got off the phone with Catch The Reference?, who called to announce some new projects. The first one is that he is cataloging old Jester tapes.  He is converting each one into digital format, and promises to provide highlights from each tape (as long as the tape has them, of course).  It is a long and tedious project, and will be ongoing for quite a while.  So stick around as the project develops.

He is also working on something else brand new, but was very cryptic, saying only that is had to do with phonebooks.  He also admitted that it may not come to fruition, explaining his hesitation to delve into detail.

Even so, with “The Boys In Blue” in development, and the promise of old Jester recordings, things are looking very exciting around here!  There should be much to be thankful for by time Thanksgiving comes around!

Not Much Ado, How ‘Bout You?

Not much is going on as of late.  Catch The Reference? is working on a new sound collage, tentatively titled “The Boys In Blue.”  Also, he may, along with William, cut a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Outside The Wall.”  As the Jester, the two had recorded this song, with William playing clarinet (overdubbed a few time to build an arrangement).  William would even play it live solo at a concert or two.  Catch The Reference? hopes to put together a tighter version that will expand upon the potential that earlier takes hinted at.  This track would kick off sessions for a proposed album “The Adventures Of Alex & William,” which would revisit the songs that Catch The Reference? & William had written or covered as far back as 2006.

Like The Leaves On The Trees, Change Is Here

As you may have noticed, Catch The Reference?’s latest project, “Butterfly,” fell through, his work instead being released as “Bad Omens For Good People.” I’d like to mention that “Butterfly” is not forever lost, but it is now on the backburner (and currently has no songs attached to it.)

That said, Catch The Reference? is considering a new project, a kind of tribute to his beginnings. Tentatively titled “The Adventures Of Alex & William,” this project would have Catch The Reference? and William re-recording their best compositions from their early collaborations. Of course, Catch The Reference? has yet to even mention it to William, so it remains to be seen as to whether or not this project is go or a non-starter.

But, if it does get the green light, it could be the most interesting release yet! It would infuse old classics with a more mature sound, and give songs that never quite made it a potential to shine. Perhaps most notably, it would showcase William performing his great clarinet solos or songs without being marred by technological limitations, but instead with a refinement and bravura that he had not yet achieved during the original recordings.
