What Happens When You Live At Home

Presented here is the culmination of Catch The Reference?’s year long residency in Brooklyn, which has now ended. In this time, he compiled the “Bitches Kitsch” compilation, wrote many lyrics, and collaborated with some wonderful friends, but this is a different type of project. It is a noisette, if you will, a scene set with different sounds and compositions. Starting late December of 2010 right up to the day it was released, the collected sounds are meant to reflect the tension that arises from being an adult living in close quarters with older family members. It is a personal journey, yet easy to understand.

1. Drumming Up Something (Filosa)
a piddling jazz concept realized through multiple overdubs, solely using virtual instruments. The drum kit is based on Tony Williams’, and Catch saw a great tribute to him. So, that’s probably the influence. Started March 23rd 2011, dubbed and mixed all the way to April 10th.

2. Snappy Goo Year (Filosa)
excited by the sounds of fireworks, Catch recorded the ambiance as the new year began. Pigs in the blanket were had, the Honeymooners would be watched, Ke$ha made a resolution that we all could try out, and life went on. Some mixing was done at some point. Otherwise, all done January 1st 2011.

3. There Are Moments Of Joy Amidst The Schizophrenic Disintegration (Filosa)
a keyboard demo, virtual, working through a chord sequence. For a while. It’s very therapeutic. Maybe something will come of it later. From February 27th 2011.

4. Frank The Gasman (Filosa)
gas was smelled. Fearing a leak, the gasman was summoned. Catch stayed on the laptop, unable to unplug it, fearing a spark. So, he recorded the encounter as the gasman did what a gasman does. The family dysfunction becomes apparent here, and one realizes how dangerous the home can be. Recorded on December 22nd, 2010, just in time for the holidays.

5. Brooklyn Evening (Filosa)
one Saturday night, Catch decided to dig out the old harmonica. Playing quietly, since everyone else was in bed, he started this, which captures the sound of a calm Brooklyn evening. One can almost see the Marlboro projects rise up, smell the pizza from Spumoni Gardens, and shiver from the brisk Coney Island breeze. Recorded February 26th 2011.

That concludes the album proper, but since there was space, a couple of unrelated bonus tracks are included.

6. A Lion’s Mane (Gerrard/Filosa) – by The Jester
William wrote the lyrics for this piece in 2007, and he and Catch would record it together. The main premise was to cut and instrumental track of keyboard and clarinet, and then put vocals on top. This process was repeated several times. However, this cut (an undubbed instrumental) is quite unique. It is backwards! It comes from a cassette titled “Fun Days,” which is described as “a very special tape. Alex managed to take it apart, and respool it in order to make it play tape backwards. He and William would specially record on it to hear how the track sounded backwards.” This recording appears to be from the summer or fall of 2007.

7. February 1st, 2011 (Filosa/Venditti/Reuben)
a little taste of what the future holds. This comes from a long improv/exercise. It’s just fun and jamming, but you can begin to get an idea of the new sound that you’ll surely be hearing more of soon. The talented guitar player is a young gentleman and possible Red Hot Chili Pepper recruit John Venditti. The lovely female vocalist is the incredibly gifted singer/songwriter/musician Savvy Girl, who is surely on the brink of super-stardom.
